November 19, 2024 /3BL/ - Due to a decline in coal use, the U.S. power sector saw an 8% reduction in carbon emissions in 2023, according to a new analysis of air emissions for the country's top 100 power producers released today. While this decrease is a significant improvement over the marginal reduction of less than 1% in carbon emissions in 2022, 2023 emissions were only 2% lower than 2020 levels due to a surge in natural gas generation.

Southwire’s Cofer Technology Center, a hub for Research & Development (R&D) initiatives, installed an innovative heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system using geothermal heat pump technology. Since becoming fully operational in November of 2023, the system has enabled significant energy and cost savings for the Cofer Technology Center, resulting in an approximately 40 % decrease in electricity consumption for the whole building.

Environmental data provider Iceberg Data Lab (IDL) announced the launch of a new tool, aimed at enabling investors to measure their deforestation impact of companies, or the surface of forest which is destroyed by their activity each year. The tool currently covers 3,500 listed companies in the world, producing seven sensitive raw materials – beef (livestock), cocoa, timber, coffee, soy, palm oil and rubber in 22 countries prone to deforestation.

Climate solutions platform Watershed announced that it has facilitated the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc) on behalf of customers including BlackRock, Ripple, Samsara, and Block. These certificates will be utilized by the companies to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Alaska Airlines passenger flights. In return, the companies will receive carbon offset credits for the emissions generated by employees’ business travel.
