It appears to me that the temporary rise in short-term interest rates between 2004 and 2006 ultimately caused the Great Recession of 2007-2009. The fact that these rates have generally been falling has also greatly aided economic growth, since many industrial and financial loans are very short term. Note the delayed impact of the rate rise.
