Much of the world’s goods travel by container ships, the primary subject of this paper. A current challenge is modifying these vessels such that they operate sustainably. This paper will review two potential solutions: a short-term solution, and a limited solution.

Further to the content in this paper, I came across what appears to be an excellent analysis of the feasibility of electrifying large container ships by the University of California, Berkeley. I skimmed though this study, and it appears to be both thorough and detailed. It is linked below;

Thank you for both publications. Part of the reason the fuel cell ships are not a bigger part of the market may relate to the relative lack of hydrogen infrastructure. If the hydrogen isn't there, easily, the ships can't use it. It may not be that the ships are waiting around in the ports for the time for the charging - that would make them lose out on business. But the charging time would have to be explored in more detail to be accurate on that point.

The primary existing process for producing green hydrogen (electrolysis) has improved over time and seems to be approaching economic viability.
