Electrolyser Gigafactory | Germany
Electrolyser Gigafactory | Germany
Siemens Energy gigawatt scale electrolyser factory in Berlin.
The 2,000 m2 site is dedicated to the mass production of electrolyser components, allowing the scale-up of low-carbon hydrogen production at a competitive cost.
The electrolysis stacks manufactured here are based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology. They feature a high degree of efficiency, ensure high product gas quality, and are particularly adapted to an intermittent renewable hydrogen supply. With 1 GW currently, the annual production capacity is expected to reach 3 GW by 2025.
With an annual production capacity of one gigawatt, Siemens Energy and Air Liquide expect a ramp-up to at least three gigawatts by 2025 with potential for more. In comparison: with installed electrolysis capacity of three gigawatt, an average of 300,000 metric tons of green hydrogen can be produced per year when operated with renewable energies. Using this green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels would avoid the CO2 emissions of a major German city with around 260,000 inhabitants.
