GEOTHERMAL TECHNOLOGIES OFFICE
GTO's Office Director Dr. Susan Hamm Announces Resignation
Moving to New Position in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

September 8, 2023

The Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) would like to share an update from Dr. Susan Hamm, who many of you know as GTO's office director:

To the GTO stakeholder community,

With bittersweet feelings, I'm writing to share that I have been selected for a new position in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and will not be returning to GTO. EERE has started the search for a new Director for GTO; the link for that opening can be found here

I truly had the most wonderful time working with the geothermal community, from 2015 until I left on a detail in 2022. I learned so much from geothermal experts, professionally and personally, and it's a rare day when I don't find myself using a geothermal example to explain something. I fully anticipate that this is not a true good-bye, but only a see-you-later-in-a-different-capacity!

When I think back on the years we spent together, the list of things GTO accomplished with the stakeholder community is broad-reaching and seems nearly endless: GeoVision; FORGE, the Enhanced Geothermal Shot ; the GTO Multi-Year Program Plan; all the new R&D in critical materials, drilling technologies, and direct use. Exciting demonstrations of both power generation and heating and cooling systems; finding "hidden" geothermal systems. Broadening our reach through collegiate competitions and the new INTERN program through NSF, not to mention the focus on leveraging technologies and workforce from the oil and gas industry. The list goes on and on, and I couldn't be more grateful for my time with the GTO team and to engage with all of you.

Thank you all for the amazing work you have done over the years and the work you're doing now; I can't wait to see what you all achieve next for geothermal energy. And, especially, thank you for being my colleagues, my support, and my friends.

All the best,

Sue Hamm
