  • Latest Hubs Serving Central New York and Southern Tier Among New Stations Slated for Mirabito Convenience Stores
  • EVolve NY Network Helps New York State Prepare for Fully Electrified Transportation System and Advances State's Clean Energy Goals
Two more electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations with four chargers each are now operating at Mirabito convenience stores in Castle Creek and Preble, north of Binghamton in the I-81 corridor, making a total of six operational sites at the store's chain locations in Central New York and the Southern Tier. Through an agreement between Mirabito and the New York Power Authority (NYPA), four more hubs are still to come in the region, helping ensure that EV drivers in New York don't have to worry about running out of charge. The additional sites further expand NYPA's statewide open-access high-speed Evolve NY network into the Central New York and Southern Tier regions. Electrifying the transportation sector will help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation and help the State reach its nation-leading clean energy goals.

"To accelerate the transition to emission-free transport, New York State needs to make charging easy and convenient for both New Yorkers and visitors providing sufficient opportunities to power up where people live and work," said Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll. "Mirabito is an ideal partner with conveniently located sites and a shared mission of seeking more sustainable solutions that preserve natural resources and move toward a cleaner energy future."

Mirabito is a family-owned and operated energy retailer based in Binghamton that operates more than 100 convenience stores throughout Central New York. EVolve NY chargers are currently hosted at two locations in Syracuse, and stores in Oneonta and Binghamton. A total of 39 ports will be located at 10 Mirabito stores by 2025. NYPA is developing, owning and operating the network in collaboration with Electrify America and in coordination with Mirabito site hosts.

"For nearly a century, Mirabito has been at the forefront of energizing and powering our communities, consistently adapting to fulfill the evolving needs of our customers. As the electric fueling' sector emerges, we take pride in extending this innovative fueling option to an increasing number of our convenience store locations," said Joe Mirabito, president and CEO of Mirabito Energy Products.

The next Mirabito site, on Route 7 in Richmondville, in Schoharie County, is set to open later this month. Agreements have been signed for three additional locations in Parish in Oswego County, Ithaca in Tompkins County and Bainbridge in Chenango County, and are expected to come online over the next two years.

NYPA maintains the largest open-access high-speed charging network in New York State with 148 ports at 38 sites along major travel corridors and in urban hubs.

The new Evolve NY Direct Current Fast Chargers can charge capable electric vehicles in as little as 20 minutes. Both the Castle Creek and Preble charging stations, on the Electrify America network, are equipped with fast charging connectors combined charging system (CCS) plugs rated up to 150 kilowatts (kW) or 350 kW and two CHAdeMO connectors rated at up to 100 kW so almost all electric vehicles, including Tesla cars with an adapter, can plug in.

"Electrify America is pleased to reaffirm our collaboration with New York Power Authority on their high-speed EVolve NY network," said Aaron Young, senior manager, commercial networks & fleets, Electrify America. "Our common objective, focused on delivering fast and convenient charging solutions to meet EV drivers' needs, aligns to and reinforces New York State's clean energy aspirations."

"Making charging electric vehicles as easy as stopping for gas is a critical step in the transition to this important green energy driver," said Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E, which completed the grid interconnection to power the equipment. "Both NYSEG and RG&E support New York State's efforts to electrify the transportation system, and are key partners in this expansion."

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation in 2021 requiring all new passenger cars, pickup trucks and SUVs sold in New York State be zero emission by 2035. The regulation will help decarbonize the state's transportation sector and advance the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which calls for emissions to be reduced 85 percent by 2050.

New York State hosts almost 1,300 public fast chargers at more than 300 locations, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center, although they range in speed from 25 kW to 350 kW which equates to varying charging times.

EV owners can locate public chargers using smartphone apps such as EV Connect, Electrify America, PlugShare, ChargeHub, ChargeWay, ChargePoint, EVGo, Google Maps, or the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center. Credit cards are accepted to charge; no subscription or membership needed.
