Charging Forward: The Growth of Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

October 3, 2023
by Steven Roys

It's a wonderful time of the year! The transition to fall brings a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively. As the temperatures cool down and the leaves start to change, it's hard to want to stay inside. With weather in the 70s, it is the ideal time for outdoor adventures. Whether it's a hike through the woods to check out the migratory birds coming through, or a trip to a corn maze with the family, fall has a bit to offer for everyone.

College football adds an extra layer of excitement to the season for me. Even though it can be tough to be a Gamecock fan at times, it is hard not to wake up each weekend excited to watch Gameday and see if South Carolina can pull out a win.

And then there's National Drive Electric Week, an annual celebration that aligns perfectly with the changing season. National Drive Electric Week is a nationwide celebration to raise awareness of the many benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other forms of electric transportation. From Sept. 22 to Oct. 1, enthusiasts and advocates come together to share their love for all things electric and educate the world about the benefits of electric transport.

Driving Toward a Cleaner Tomorrow

As the world steers toward technological advancements, electric vehicles have emerged as the frontrunners. Promising reduced operating costs and less maintenance than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) are reshaping the automotive industry. This shift in the automotive landscape is gaining momentum and changing the way we think about transportation.

Unless you have avoided all advertisements for the past year, you are probably seeing new ads every week about many of the EVs that manufacturers are making available. However, what might have escaped the limelight to some extent is the rise of EV charging infrastructure a vital component of the evolving EV ecosystem. Here's a quick update on EV infrastructure and its role in the broader EV landscape.

The Backbone of EVs: Charging Infrastructure

Imagine electric vehicle infrastructure as the backbone of the electric vehicle ecosystem. It encompasses charging stations, connectors, and supporting equipment that allow EVs to recharge and get back on the road. Without this vital infrastructure, the widespread adoption of EVs would remain a challenge.

Luckily, the growth of EV infrastructure has been steady and significant. A concerted effort by both public and private entities has expanded EV charging over the past few years. From home charging setups to fast-charging stations strategically positioned along highways and urban centers, accessibility is improving.

What Fuels the Growth?

  1. Government Support: The U.S. government is actively supporting the growth of EVs by providing incentives, grants, and tax credits for the installation of charging stations. These incentives encourage both individuals and businesses to invest in EVSE. Leading the charge with these investments is the $5 billion set aside for the development of a national charging network.
  2. Automaker Contributions: Automakers are also playing a crucial role by investing in charging infrastructure. Manufacturers are working together to create consistency among charging ports, and many manufacturers are requiring dealerships to add charging infrastructure on-site for customers.
  3. Utility Engagement: Power utilities are stepping up to help with the development of EV infrastructure. In fact, Santee Cooper has two programs currently available to our customers. A residential program that rebates for the purchase of prequalifying charging stations, as well as a competitive commercial grant program that allows customers to apply for funds for their EV projects.

More info about those programs can be found at Electric Vehicle Incentives - EmpowerAuto - Santee Cooper

  1. Technological Advancements: Advancements in charging technology, such as faster chargers and improved battery tech, are addressing concerns about charging speed and range anxiety. These improvements make EVs a more viable and appealing choice for consumers.

A Glimpse into the Future

The future of EV infrastructure looks promising. Innovations are in the pipeline, aiming for faster charging and a seamless user interface. The goal is to make EVs even more convenient, efficient, and cost-friendly for all drivers.

The growth of EV infrastructure is instrumental in the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. We are on the path to a future where electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure will redefine the way we drive, offering enhanced convenience and cost efficiency. Let's keep charging forward and illuminate the road to a brighter, more efficient future.
