J-POWER Begins Operation of Onikobe Geothermal Power Station
Renovated Geothermal Power Station in Kurikoma National Park Starts Operating, with Local Cooperation

May 8, 2023

Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER, headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Toshifumi Watanabe) completed the renovation of the Onikobe Geothermal Power Station in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, beginning commercial operation on April 2, 2023.

The power station, first operating in 1975, was shut down in 2017 for renovations. Today, with all facilities fully renewed, power generation has resumed.

The turbine and generator are decorated to resemble a naruko kokeshi doll, a local traditional handicraft, reflecting the plant's aim to be well-known and loved as a local power station that is contributing to the nearby community.

The J-POWER Group is working to develop the introduction of renewable energy projects to achieve carbon neutrality, as stated in the J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050 announced on February 26, 2021.

Geothermal power generation one of the power generation methods that emit the least amount of greenhouse gases is a purely domestic renewable energy source that enables stable operation independent of natural conditions.

The J-POWER Group will continue to strive for the sustainable development and reliable operation of geothermal power generation into the future.
