A major gas lobby has been questioned over its claims about the electrification of Australian homes.

The Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA) recently claimed that the electrification of Australian homes would cost taxpayers over $66 billion, a figure disputed by Rewiring Australia.

APGA based its calculations on a pilot program that offered subsidies to up to 1000 households to fully electrify their homes, a method that Rewiring Australia argues cannot be extrapolated to the whole country.

Rewiring Australia predicts that it will be cost-effective for households to replace gas appliances with electric vehicles, solar, and efficient alternatives by the mid-2020s.

This move away from gas is expected to both benefit consumers while also reducing emissions and helping Australia meet its climate targets.
