Australia’s slowly growing fleet of wind farms have set a new output record – the first so far in 2023 as the country enters its regular windy season.

According to data collected by GPE NemLog2, the new instantaneous output record of 7,323.9MW was set at 10.15pm (AEST) on Thursday, June 8, when it was accounting for just over 30 per cent of the main grid’s electricity supply.

That beat the previous record set on August 8, 2022. The margin wasn’t huge – just 19MW – but given that a number of new wind farms have connected to the grid over the past year, including Berrybank 2 in Victoria, and Dulacca and Kaban in Queensland, that record is expected to be bettered multiple times over winter.

Victoria also bettered its instantaneous wind output for the third time in a week, with the new record set at 3,690.4MW at 8.50pm on Thursday.
