THE GEOTHERMAL TECHNOLOGIES OFFICE
Welcome Lauren Boyd, GTO's New Office Director

February 13, 2024

The Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) is excited to welcome Lauren Boyd as our new Office Director. Lauren will lead the Office's overall strategic, technical, and project oversight of research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) on innovative technologies that enhance geothermal exploration and production. In this role, she will partner with industry, academia, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) national laboratories, and others to increase geothermal energy deployment and advance geothermal energy as an economically competitive and widely available part of the U.S. energy supply.

Lauren has served as GTO's senior advisor for the past few months, providing technical expertise for Office-wide efforts to improve performance, reduce costs, and accelerate deployment of all geothermal technologies. Prior to her senior advisor role, Lauren served as GTO's acting director and as the enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) program manager, responsible for all of GTO's EGS-related activities. In this role, Lauren provided technical expertise as well as supported strategic planning, budget formulation, and project execution of a broad portfolio of EGS RD&D and innovative technology initiatives, including DOE's flagship EGS research site, the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (or FORGE), EGS Collab, and the Enhanced Geothermal Shot . Lauren also manages DOE's international portfolio on geothermal and represents the United States on several international steering committees.

"Moving into this role is an honor," says Lauren. "I feel so lucky to continue to work alongside my GTO colleagues - an incredible group of people whose passion and deep commitment to advancing and sharing the unique benefits of all forms of geothermal energy inspire me every day. My priority is to continue to foster innovation and increased accessibility through our initiatives, working with our dynamic and growing community to realize the benefits of geothermal for all."

Lauren is a passionate advocate for geothermal energy and GTO is thrilled to have her at the helm. As she steps into the director role, GTO Acting Director and Operations Supervisor Cullen Henderson is moving on to join the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Workforce Management Office as deputy director. GTO is thankful for his service with the Office for more than two years and wishes him all the best!
