Singapore conglomerate Keppel Corporation has appointed its first chief sustainability officer.

Ho Tong Yen moves into the role after more than six years as director of group communications, and three years as the chief executive of Keppel’s philanthropic arm, Keppel Care Foundation. His new role is effective from 1 March.

Ho was previously chief executive of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development, a planned sustainable urban development in China. Before that he was a Singapore diplomat, and served as press secretary to former prime minister Goh Chok Tong.

Ho takes on the new role as Keppel sharpens its focus on sustainability. The company, whose interests include asset management, offshore and marine, renewables and infrastructure, aims to halve its direct and indirect Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Keppel is also planning to reduce its exposure to fossil fuel-related businesses. The group announced it would exit the offshore rig-building business, in January last year. The company is part of a consortium planning to develop carbon capture technology to reduce its climate impact.
