Towards Environmentally Sustainable AI [video]

Based on research developments at the University of Pennsylvania, Professors Deep Jariwala and Benjamin Lee explore, from a holistic perspective, the environmental impacts of the super-linear growth trends for AI, taking into account data, software, and hardware. In addition to analyzing the total carbon footprint of AI associated with model development, computational operations, and system manufacturing, they discuss how the field of AI can advance in an environmentally responsible manner.

This event was part of the 2023-2024 workshop series, AI and Climate Change: Global Sustainability in an Era of Artificial Intelligence, organized by the Penn Program on Regulation. Co-sponsors include the Environmental Innovations Initiative, Kleinman Center for Energy Policy, Center for Technology, Innovation & Competition, Warren Center for Network and Data Sciences, and Wharton Climate Center.
