10 Years of Industry-Changing Influence: The Geothermal Data Repository's 10th Anniversary

August 18, 2022

This year we're celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Geothermal Data Repository (GDR), an industry leader in the open data movement, initiated by funding from the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) in 2012!!! This publicly available resource provides visitors with data and information related to projects funded by GTO, is free to access and continually updated, and facilitates geothermal collaboration across the globe.

"The GDR has opened the door for DOE to collaborate with smaller universities and high school students, underprivileged communities, and startup companies. It's leading to entirely new sources of innovation," said Jon Weers, GDR co-creator and lead data systems architect at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). With more than 2.6 million downloads to date, the GDR serves as a critical data source to advance energy equity and create more trust in global data sharing.

Check out the data:

  • Total downloads in Fiscal Year 2022: nearly 1 million
  • Amount of data the GDR contains: 135 terabyte
    • 135 terabytes is equal to 4.09 Wikipedias and 1.8 billion books
  • Total resources available on the GDR: 5,093
