This year, Americans’ confidence in many institutions — from big business to the medical system to Congress — hit record lows. But a majority still hold faith in small businesses, which often serve as the cornerstone of local economies and make up much of the Certified B Corporation community. This show of confidence reflects the role that small business owners and workers hold in their community, and the relationships they develop with customers and business partners.
It also indicates the opportunity that B Corps have to build on their role as community leaders and call for policy change and other measures to require more companies to account for their social and environmental impact and adopt governance that instills these practices. To encourage more businesses to consider and take these steps, this week we introduce a new downloadable resource filled with real-world examples of B Corps taking action and calling for an economy that works for all.
A New Business Resource for Policy Action
B Corps are increasingly driving collective political action to build a more inclusive and regenerative economy. Want to do the same at your company? Combining Business Growth and Positive Impact Growth? Yes, It’s Possible
In the early stage of a company, opting for a governance structure to generate positive impact can be risky and likely will involve some limits on sourcing, procurements, and hiring. But it doesn’t necessarily create financial problems — in fact, it can mean the opposite. On B The Change, Victor Hugo Ramos of B Corp IMPT! explains how being a benefit corporation serves as an advantage for the company in its market.
Seeking Higher Standards for Packaging — and Businesses
More businesses looking to benefit the environment and greater society are seeing the need to step up their actions and speak up for policy change — a new approach to drive business action and create a more inclusive economy. It’s also why Judith Enck and her organization, Beyond Plastics, are advocating for state legislation to reduce packaging waste and increase standards for recycled content — steps to avoid what she calls “unsustainable waste disposal.”
