2023 SBER Q2 Symposium: CSRD & Scenario Analysis

SR Inc held our second quarterly 2023 Executive Symposium on June 22nd at simultaneous live events at the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, CA and the Cambridge Innovation Center in Cambridge, MA, as well as virtually. In the first session of “Sustainability Strategy Leadership,” participants first heard from SR Inc CEO Jim Boyle and two Member-Client speakers, largely on the topic of causing new renewable energy capacity and approaches to decarbonization. This discussion was then followed by the presentation of two Member-Advisory deliverables, the first focused on the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the latter on TCFD scenario analysis

EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) Member Advisory

SR Inc’s just-released CSRD Member Advisory covers the background, logistics, requirements, and implications of the reporting framework, which is the EU’s newly implemented mandatory sustainability reporting directive. CSRD’s scope includes non-EU companies that do significant business within the EU, and many Member-Clients will need to prepare to release CSRD-compliant reports starting in 2025. The advisory analyzes key requirements of CSRD, compares CSRD against other global reporting frameworks, and offers stepwise guidance for effective Member-Client preparation.

SR Inc Guide to Scenario Analysis Member Advisory

The SR Inc Research & Consulting team also just released the SR Inc Guide to Scenario Analysis, which walks Member-Clients through both qualitative and quantitative TCFD-aligned best practice for the exercise. The guide identifies and outlines two IPCC-developed scenarios, one in a low emissions 2°C world and another in a high emissions 4-5°C future. The advisory then outlines the steps of organizing the exercise logistically, recommendations on which team members to include, and prompting questions to initiate discussion. Finally, the guide provides an output template aligned with the CDP Climate questionnaire to make it easy for Member-Clients to organize and report on the results of their exercise.

Complementary to this guidance, SR Inc has also released a thought leadership piece on how scenario analysis best practice should evolve. Current best practice tends to focus somewhat narrowly on direct risks to your company, such as damage to coastal physical assets due to sea level rise, rather than considering the more systemic climate impacts in a high emissions scenario. This piece aims to progress best practice on scenario analysis forward to begin prompting consideration of risk to your company’s supply chain and more indirect systems that impact your business’s capacity to operate.
